Visit to Sauflon’s Contact Lens Facility

John Harwood Partners Andy Rourke, Michelle McIndoe and Charlotte Cook were invited to visit Sauflon’s state of the art contact lens Manufacturing facility in Budapest at the beginning of October.

The British company has it’s Research and Development facility in Southampton, but due to it’s expanding business, it needed to open an additional manufacturing facility. Its capacity exceeds 100 million soft contact lenses a day. The operation now has 140 employees.

The state-of-the-art equipment is mainly from the UK, however the nanotechnology robots are from Japan, and there are some German and Italian moulding and packaging machines. The site is managed by a Hungarian team that has experience with medical device regulated products, which was one of the advantages for Sauflon coming to Hungary over two years ago.

The factory today combines the manual work of its employees with automated work processes, and is currently undergoing a major capacity expansion to be able to fully exploit the opportunities offered by the new SiH (silicon hydrogel) technologies. Sauflon produce many types of soft contact lens, but they have recently won awards for their Clariti family of contact lenses that are made from SiH.

During the visit, Andy, Charlotte and Michelle were shown around the now extensive premises by production staff and witnessed the production facility in action. At the end of the visit, Charlotte Cook said: “I had expected to see a state of the art production facility, but was amazed by the the sheer scale of the operation. I didn’t realise that so much technology would be involved in the production of a soft contact lens and really value what Sauflon are providing for our Patients.”

After the visit to the manufacturing facility, the Partners were free to explore beautiful Budapest.

If you would like to try any of the new Clariti soft contact lenses, please speak to one of our members of staff, who can arrange  for you to have a contact lens consultation with one of our Optometrists.
