Questions
Some frequesntly asked questions…
What do contact lenses feel like?
Contact lenses are very thin but more durable than you might think. They are stored in a solution similar to your tears so on insertion they won’t sting. There are different sizes and fittings so the practitioner will assess your eyes to decide which lens is best for you. It is usual to feel there is something on your eye but you’ll soon become used to it. Adaptation time is usually quicker for soft materials than for hard materials but once you are used to them, both can be comfortable.
Is it difficult to wear and care for them?
Different lenses have different care regimes according to the material from which they are made and how long they are to be kept for. The care of your lenses will be covered your “Application and Removal” appointment. This will cover everything you need to know.
Are there any risks associated with lens wear?
It is important that all contact lens wearers practice a high level of hygiene with a regular cleaning regime as stated by your practitioner. Infection from contact lens wear is rare and only usually occurs as a result of poor compliance. If you ensure that you wash your hands thoroughly before handling contact lenses and clean your lenses in the way that we advise, your chances of developing an infection will be much lower.
Some people react to certain solution types but the practitioner will be able to advise of suitable alternatives.
Will I still need glasses?
Even if you plan to wear contact lenses all the time, there are occasions when an up-to-date pair of glasses will be invaluable. Examples might include feeling unwell, having an eye infection, losing or damaging lenses or running out of contact lenses. It is also good practice to have a break from lenses for a few hours in the day, so you will need some spectacles that you feel happy wearing as an alternative to contact lenses.
